SPIRULINA FOR HORSES

WHAT IS SPIRULINA?

Spirulina is a blue-green alga, considered one of the best plant-based protein sources. As well as having a high protein content (around 60%), it is a high quality protein source, providing all the 'essential' amino acids - those that cannot be made by the body and must be provided in the diet.

On top of being an excellent source of amino acids, Spirulina contains other useful nutrients including essential fatty acids, vitamins, minerals, phycocyanin and anti-oxidants.¹

WHY FEED SPIRULINA FOR HORSES?

In order to build muscles, those muscles need to be worked, but they also need protein in the form of amino acids - the building blocks of muscle. Spirulina is a highly digestible source of high quality protein. It provides all the essential amino acids needed to build muscle.

Spirulina is also rich in antioxidants such as carotenoids and phycocyanin which help neutralise the free radicals produced during exercise. Additionally it is a great source of essential fatty acids which support the body's natural anti-inflammatory processes.

WHEN TO FEED SPIRULINA TO HORSES

Spirulina is useful whenever there is an increased demand on the body to build muscle.

This could be due to:

• intense training and competition
• increasing exercise levels such as a young horse coming into training or building fitness at the start of the season
• recovery from a lay off after illness or injury
• disorders that cause muscles loss such as PPID (Cushing's disease)
• an older horse or one with dental disease struggling to maintain condition
